Superintendent Neil O'Brien

Meet the superintendent

Neil O'Brien joined the Port Byron Central School District as Superintendent of Schools in August 2004.

Mr. O'Brien, who has a degree in economics from St. John Fisher College, worked for the XEROX Corporation and as a social studies teacher prior to beginning his administrative career in 1994.

He is passionate about providing the best educational experience for students and working with the community, power brokers in the region and Albany to provide the best for stakeholders.

During his tenure Port Byron school and community have experienced great growth even within the context of difficult economic times.

Mr. O’Brien received both his master’s degree in secondary social studies and his certificate in advanced studies, educational administration, from the State University of New York at Brockport. He began his career as a social studies teacher in the Gates-Chili Central School District in Gates, New York.

In 1994, he was hired as assistant principal at Leroy Junior Senior High School. Three years later assumed a variety of administrative positions including assistant principal, principal and interim district technology coordinator for the Gananda Central School District.

He and his wife, Dr. Lynn O'Brien have two daughters. Dr. O'Brien is a full professor of BioChemistry at Nazareth College in Pittsford, NY. Outside of their shared love of teaching and learning, they enjoy travel and time with family.

In addition to belonging to numerous community and professional boards and organizations, he currently serves on the Commissioner of Education’s Advisory Council and is President-Elect of both the Leadership for Educational Achievement Foundation (LEAF) and separately New York State Council of School Superintendent’s (NYSCOSS). He has been a guest instructor for the Cayuga Leadership Seminar multiple times, co-facilitated the Central New York School Board’s financial training for school board members and for three years, taught a one-day seminar for aspiring superintendents.

Mr. O'Brien writes a weekly message, available on the website here.
