Port Byron senior Jessi Menotti will attend Nazareth College in the fall.

Class of 2017 Senior Spotlight: Jessi Menotti

On graduation day, Port Byron Central School District’s Class of 2017 will be missing one key member: its salutatorian.

Graduating in one of Class of 2017’s top spots and heading to Nazareth College this fall, senior Jessi Menotti was recently invited to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of an annual concert series, which is scheduled for the same weekend as Port Byron’s commencement ceremony.

“It was a very big decision for her, but music is Jessi’s passion and we support that,” said Dana L. West Junior/Senior High School counselor Tracey Pirozzolo.

“In sixth grade, I started playing percussion,” Jessi said. “This became a significant event for me because it provided me with an outlet and led to a career path.”

Jessi plans to continue her love of music in college and will study Nazareth’s music therapy program.

While attending Dana L. West Junior/Senior High School, Jessi participated in Panther Press (print editions), drama and book clubs, and Masterminds. She was a member of National Honor Society, jazz band, All-County band, Area All-State band, Syracuse Youth Orchestra, Auburn Chamber Orchestra and the school’s cross country and track teams (indoor and outdoor).

During the summer months, Jessi was a counselor at Freedom Recreation Camp and Westhill Band Camp. At Westhill, she provided lessons and mentored local middle and junior high students in chamber music and ensemble experiences.

“The one thing I’ll miss the most about high school is playing in the musicals,” she said. “I was able to make my own creative decisions and work with adults.”

Jessi is the daughter of Sherry and John Menotti.
