Robotics team advances to regional championship

One of Port Byron Central School District's robotics teams is gearing up for the next level of competition.

On Dec. 10, Port Byron's Gizmos and Gadgets robotics team will participate in the Lego for Education's For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Lego League Regional Championship event at the University of Rochester. The team qualified for the event following a top-place finish at the Cayuga-Onondaga Tournament on Nov. 11.

To participate in the challenge, students work together to design, build, and program a robot for field game competitions. During the event, robots are evaluated based on how well they complete game tasks, which are commonly called "missions." The goal is to score enough points during the contest to secure a spot in the championship round.

Port Byron's Jack and Crew robotics team also participated in the November event, which was open to all local teams. A total of eight groups participated and two, including Gizmos and Gadgets qualified for the Dec. 10 competition.

Port Byron's teams are led by coaches Mr. Wenwei Hsu and Mr. Eric Elliott. The extracurricular activity focuses on using problem-solving, research and teamwork strategies to help students better understand science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts.
