High school robotics team advances to semi-finals

Several Port Byron Central School District students recently put their technical skills and engineering principles to the test.

On Dec. 16, members of Port Byron’s high school robotics team, Pb Lead Heads competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) at St. John Fisher College. Twenty-four teams representing New York state schools participated in the event, which challenges student groups to design, build, program, and operate robots for head-to-head competition.

Pb Lead Heads scored enough points during tournament play to clinch fifth place and advance to the event’s semi-final round.

"The team had a great time and their performance continues to improve,” said Mr. Wenwei Hsu, who coaches the team with teacher Mr. John Mulcahey. “We’re planning to attend at least one more tournament this year."

Students who attended the Dec. 16 tournament include Abby Vincent, Anna Vincent, Ben York, Braden York, Emma Redmond, Sophie Redmond, Stephen Dahl, Chelsea Rooker, and Kelcie Cordway.
