Port Byron Senior Maria Hannah Aguja Named Student Board of Education Representative

A new state law that went into effect July 1, 2025, gives students in New York a seat at the table. All school boards in the state are now required to include at least one student member. While student representatives will not be permitted to vote or attend executive sessions, they will take part in public meetings, providing valuable student input on important district matters.
At Port Byron, 12th grade student Maria Hannah Aguja has been selected to serve as the district’s first Student Board of Education Representative.
Maria Hannah, who moved to Port Byron from the Philippines in 7th grade, said her own journey inspired her to take on this leadership role.
“When I first came here, I didn’t always know what was available to help me,” Hannah said. “Now that I do, I want to share that knowledge so other students can succeed.”
Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country and learning English, Maria Hannah quickly found her footing with the help of supportive teachers and resources. Today, she is ranked in the top 10 of her graduating class, is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in the New Visions program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES as she prepares to pursue a career in nursing.
She credits the guidance and encouragement of her teachers and administrators along the way.
“Mr. Brown is always on the watch to make sure kids are in the right hands,” Hannah said.
As the Student BOE Representative, Hannah plans to visit clubs, connect with her peers, and listen closely to their needs and concerns. She hopes to serve as a strong advocate and ensure that the student perspective is represented at the board table.
“I love it here,” Hannah said. “There are so many more opportunities at Port Byron, and I want every student to be able to take advantage of them.”
