Port Byron Expands Career Exploration Opportunities for Students

Port Byron Central School District is taking intentional steps to prepare students for their futures by introducing them to a wide range of trades and career fields—starting at a young age.
From hands-on STEM lessons in the elementary grades to exposure to real-world career experiences in middle and high school, Port Byron is helping students discover their passions and explore pathways that lead to success after graduation.
This year, students in grades 7 and 8 will attend career exploration events provided by MACNY (Manufacturers Association of Central New York) and other regional partners, giving them a firsthand look at industries such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, engineering, construction, and the skilled trades.
Last week, students met with members of the trades—including carpenters and electricians—to learn what their work life is like and get a hands-on feel for the job. They bent conduit, hammered nails, and drilled drywall screws while hearing firsthand about the skills, teamwork, and problem-solving that go into a career in the trades. These hands-on experiences help students discover potential career pathways and encourage them to start thinking about theirfutures.
Teachers across the district are integrating career-connected learning into the classroom—helping students connect academic subjects to practical applications in the workplace. Whether through STEM labs, WOZed kits, LEGO education, or project-based learning opportunities, students are gaining skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.
“Our goal is to make sure students understand all of their options,” said Katie Naples, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. “At Port Byron, we believe every student deserves the chance to pursue college or any other career path that matches their interests and strengths. We want students to graduate from Port Byron confident in the direction that’s right for them.”
By building awareness early and reinforcing it throughout the school years, Port Byron continues to support its mission of preparing each student for a future of fulfillment, purpose, and productive citizenship.
